needed to develop Stella’s App I came across the Pozible website. I took a tour
around and looked at other people’s projects. I was amazed at the diversity that
was on offer. There were musicians, artists, techno people, actors, movie
makers… the list is endless.
Some of them really took my fancy and one of the pledges I made
was towards a school student who was trying to get to South Africa for the
World Debating Championships.
Why did I pledge money to his cause? I really admired his
dedication and his determination to reach his goal. I guess there was a level of
honesty that attracted me to this project. I have no experience with debating
nor did I even know there were competitions at a world level and, if I’m really
frank, I don’t know if I’m really interested in either. But this guy was and he
was passionate about representing his country and confident about the skills he
had as a debater. And I admired this.
When I received an email saying that he’d reached his target I
actually yelled out ‘yeah!’ and then something strange happened. I began to feel
like I was part of his journey. I thought to myself, ‘I played a small part in
helping his achieve his dream.’ I felt that I had a sense of belonging and now I
had a relationship with the World Debating Championships.
Do you know what reward I chose? A hand written postcard from
South Africa. It’s not much is it? But I am really looking forward to getting
and I know I’m going to keep long after the championships are over. Why? Because
I helped in a small way and it felt good.
